The 60th Annual Grammy Awards is one for the books. The James Corden-hosted event really brought out the tears, especially when Kesha took the stage with Cyndi Lauper, Julia Michaels, Andra Day, Camila Cabello, and Bebe Rexha to perform her hit single, “Praying.”
But did you know one of the most emotional events of the night went down even before the first performer took the stage? That’s right — before the clock struck 8:00pm in New York City, where the 2018 Grammys ceremony was hosted, the winner of the Best Spoken Word Album award was announced… and it’s Carrie Fisher.
The legendary Star Wars actress, who passed away in December 2016, won the prize over Neil deGrasse Tyson, Bruce Springsteen, Shelly Peiken, Bernie Sanders & Mark Ruffalo, for her narration of her own book, The Princess Diarist. This was her second nomination (her audiobook recording of Wishful Drinking earned her a nomination for a 2009 Grammy Award for the same category), but first win, which made it all the more special.
The late star’s daughter, Billie Lourd, did not attend the event, but she acknowledged her mother’s accomplishment on Instagram:
“Princess Diarist was the last profesh(ish) thing my momby and I got to do together,” the 25-year-old Scream Queens actress wrote in the caption. “I wish she was here to carry me down the red carpet in some bizarre floral ensemble but instead we’ll celebrate in true Carrie style: in bed in front of the TV over cold Coca Colas and warm e cigs. I’m beyond proud. @recordingacademy.”
As Billie mentioned, she worked with her mom on the audiobook… but that wasn’t the only time she got to collaborate with the Hollywood icon. Billie also cameoed in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and snagged a slightly larger role in 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
